WHAT IS NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH? [source: www.americansecurityeducators.com]
[source: Crime Prevention Ctr, California Attorney General’s Office]
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with the LAPD to reduce crime in our community.
Neighborhood Watch is NOT involved with intervening or stopping crimes -- that’s LAPD responsibility.
It DOES involve:
• Citizens watching for & reporting suspicious activity
• Neighbors getting to know each other
• Neighborhood Watch signs posted on streets*
• Meetings with Law Enforcement on a quarterly basis (Hermon Safety Cmte)
• Prioritizing city safety projects
• Prevention strategies and training
• Home Security
• Apartment & Multi-Unit Dwelling Security
• Business Security
• Operation Identification (fingerprinting kids, etc)
• Block Captains
• Bicycle Safety
• Silent Observers
• How to Report a Crime
*Councilmember Huizar has offered to provide 4 free NW signs (18”x24”) for all new teams that form and register with the LAPD . Hermon is currently registering and hopes to complete the process by Fall 2009, as well as solicit donations for 10 additional signs.
TIPS -- Please look & listen for...
• Screaming or shouting for help
• Someone looking into windows of houses or parked cars
• Unusual noises
• Property being taken out of house when no one is home
• Property being taken out of building when business is closed
• Cars, vans or trucks moving slowly with no apparent destination
• Anyone being forced into a vehicle
• A stranger running through private yards or alleyways
